Throughout the week, we will be sharing practical tips and essential guidance to help building owners, contractors, and residents understand the importance of purchasing, installing, and maintaining fire doors correctly.
About Fire Door Safety Week
Fire Door Safety Week (FDSW) was launched in response to a legacy of fire door neglect. Run by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and backed by industry and partner organisations such as the National Fire Chiefs Council, British Safety Council and the London Fire Brigade, the campaign aims to improve public understanding of how vital fire doors are in saving lives during a fire.
Why Fire Doors Matter
A fire door is not just a door – it’s a carefully engineered safety device designed to hold back fire and smoke for a specified period of time. In everyday use, it works like any other door, but in the event of a fire, it can:
- Contain fire and smoke
- Allow safe evacuation routes
- Reduce property damage
- Provide critical time for emergency services
- Ultimately, save lives
A fully compliant fire door set includes:
- Door leaf
- Door frame
- Apertures and glazing (if applicable)
- Intumescent fire and smoke seals
- Essential ironmongery
Like fire alarms and extinguishers, fire doors must be regularly inspected and properly maintained to function effectively.
A Shared Responsibility
Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. From manufacturers, installers and residents through to building managers, we all play a part in ensuring fire doors are installed properly, reported when faulty, and maintained correctly.
This year, Fire Door Safety Week will highlight the latest fire risks across the UK while reinforcing the message – Check it, Close it: Protection starts at the door aims to raise awareness of the critical role of fire doors play in holding back the spread of fire and smoke and making sure that education and understanding is made available to all building users to protect people, possessions and property in the event of a fire.
